– Court drops laundering charges due to insufficient evidence
The Criminal Court yesterday acquitted a Burmese businessman, a Thai senator’s son-in-law, and an electricity distribution company all accused of laundering drug money.  The courts, however, deemed that the evidence presented was not sufficient to prove guilt.  Arrested in September of last year,  they were charged with re-selling power across the border into Myanmar and to those areas where Chinese run businesses, now mostly running on generators, had been cut off by the Burmese military.

– Warning for travellers from Bangkok Airport

A Thai ladyboy is telling Hong Kong police that she was duped into carrying marijuana into their country by a Thai man who stuffed it onto her bag without her knowing. He, according to she, had asked for help as he was overweight on his baggage allowance.  Of course, ticketing counters always ask if you packed your own bag, but that aside, we are told,  30 others have set up a group where each claims to have been duped by the same wily character.

– Thai Immigration officers jailed for 42 years
Media has just been made aware of a case involving immigration officers found guilty of assisting a drug dealer in entering and leaving the country numerous times.   Combined?  They were sentenced to 42 years behind bars.

– 3 charged with extorting Rice Department director
The director-general of the Agriculture Ministry’s Rice Department has told the press that he worked with authorities in a sting operation that saw three arrested and charged with extortion. It seems they threatened to go public with the idea that HE had been involved in financial irregularities.  All they wanted was.. 2 million baht, according to him.

– Drunk Brit accused of biting Pattaya taxi driver
In Pattaya, police have to sift through two sides of a story that led to an assault, with a taxi driver claiming that he drove an inebriated British man back to his home , only for the man to try to avoid payment and even BITE him on his lip, back and stomach, and the British man claiming that the driver attacked HIM and he had only defended himself.   The driver states that his fare asked him to stop so that he could take a leak, only to instead take off with a local motorcycle taxi driver for the rest of his journey,  the taxi man claims to have followed them to the man’s home where the assault took place.  It was the taxi man who called the police, and getting any real answer from the British man was left until he sobered SO.. we may find the truth by weeks end.

– Authorities clampdown on beggars using children in Pattaya
Begging has once again become prolific in the city, seeing local teams out checking and finding children used to collect from passing strangers.  Rarely, are they Thai though and in most cases authorities found them to be Burmese.
