– Government crackdown on scammers in Thailand
The government’s Anti-Online Scam Operation Centre, one of the many new departements seeing set up this year, was launched this week and is based in the capital but covering the whole country. With a hotline number set up 1441 for people to report scams, the operation is supported not only by the establishments but also by the Thai bankers association and the broadcasting authority. This then is a serious operation as is the result of numerous online and telephone rip offs across the country. We can expect results quickly too, as all will be keen to flex their muscles, and the complaint list is vaste with the new heads of department stating that up to 700 scam and fraud cases, large or small, are currently taking place daily.

– Jail escapee’s getaway driver arrested
In the South of Thailand, where a local gang leader escaped from a hospital after being chained to a bed there, following his feeling sick, the escapee, facing a 20 year jail term has still yet to be found BUT, at least one of those who helped him escape has been arrested. The getaway driver, a pal of his, has now been taken into custody and two civil servants, suspects of assisting him, are expected to be in study by the weekend too. The driver has confirmed that they switched vehicles at least once in a well planned escape and that he dropped the gang boss, found guilty of drug dealing, money laundering, attempted murder and an armed attack on authorities in the past… off in a rural area.

– Government website hacker nabbed
An internet hacker, who didn’t realize authorities were tracking HIM, has been nabbed at a border crossing in Chiang rai province. Yesterday’s arrest follows claims that HE hacked into over 100 government websites, and altered the content for his own gain. Changing the content meant that visitors were redirected to other web addresses, operated by him such as gambling sites.

– Online gun supplier arrested
In the capital an illegal wholesaler of fake and air guns has been arrested and 400 weapons seized. He was an online seller and they are being targeted by police after the juvenile gunman who spewed bullets around siam paragon mall was found to be using guns MODIFIED from those intended only for blanks. It’s worth noting that trying to modify most air guns would be extremely dangerous as they are NOT built to handle real bullets and, basically, can’t be either, however many resemble real guns and so they too are being seized nationally. To date, some 2000 ply guns have been confiscated nationally.
