VERY LATEST NEWS FROM THAILAND in English (24 October 2023) from Fabulous 103fm Pattaya

– Thais celebrate the memory of King Chulalongkorn
As Thailand celebrated the memory of King Rama 5 during the three day weekend, so their majesties the King and Queen paid homage to his memory, as did many Thais nationally, at memorials to the king who began the modernization of what was then, Siam. King Chulalongkorn reigned from 1868 to 1910, studied English and Western subjects and was key in the country’s development including the introduction of railways and the avoidance of colonization which was, in those days, rife. He came to the throne at the young age of just 15 and oversaw the release of slaves to freedom, the denunciation of a feudal system and introduction of a national education system that still works today.

– Manhunt & 100,000 baht reward for escaped convict
A well organized prison break has seen a 37 year old Thai, on a 20 year sentence, escape without trace in Southern Thailand. With a reward of 100K offered by police, and warrants issued for at least three outsiders who assisted him, it seems he was admitted to hospital, under guard, following claims of fainting after a dental op. With the aid of others he had secured a mobile phone in a Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital before being assisted by one to leave, whilst another waited outside in a vehicle that was replaced several times during the flight. Police report that he had tried, and failed, to cross over into Myanmar by a regular crossing and it’s now possible that he DID subsequently cross over there via a countryside crossing. Authorities are investigating claims that at least one prison warden was complicit in the escape as was a hospital carer.

– Funeral for Thailand’s Muslim leader
In Songkhla, the funeral took place for the former Muslim leader of Thailand who passed away in a BKK hospital. Attendees included representatives of HM the King, who granted Royal soil to the rites, along with a deputy PM and other dignitaries.

– Village headsman crushed by wild elephant
Driving a herd of wild elephants from farmland in Surat thani, a local team headed by the village head wasn’t expecting the animals, normally easy to drive away from, turning on them. Seems one cow was defensive as it had a calf with it, that in turn saw the headsman crushed and beyond saving. The animals had been stripping valuable crops when locals called for help.

– Foreigner severely injured in late night Pattaya motorbike accident
CCTV caught a young Korean crashing into a German as both rode bikes in the city on the third road. The Korean appears to be cutting the other off in the street before the collision that has seen the German hospitalised with very serious injuries. Medics attended the scene and treated the two, along with a Thai lady, believed to have been a passenger. And the Korean is likely to face police charges along with hospital fees and compensation.

– Busy 3 day weekend for Pattaya
City attractions, hotels and eateries report an extremely business 3 day weekend as the last of the domestic tourists left for home last night. Roads were busy for sure from midday onwards. Despite the daily downpours , we are told, the number of visitors was above expectations.
