VERY LATEST NEWS FROM THAILAND in English (21 November 2023) from Fabulous 103fm Pattaya

– Fake money found in murdered tourist’s safe
Police investigating the killing of a Taiwanese man, suspected of being involved in various nefarious activities and killed in his rented rooms in the capital after being beaten have revealed that a search of his accommodation led to the discovery of huge stashes of fake money along with printing equipment. Inside two hidden safes, possibly the very ones that his attackers wanted to find, cops found fake US currency along with pre-prepared paper.  With two of his attackers in custody, both making statements to reduce their sentences, others, including a Thai woman and a Westerner are being sought.

– Will overseas incomes be taxed in Thailand?
With numerous Bookkeepers warning expats that their incomes from overseas are subject to tax, as of 1 January, it has YET to be clarified as to what portion of income is subject, if any, TO Tax and how the regulations that prevent dual taxation wil be applied. Essentially, Thailand has reciprocal arrangements with numerous nations whereby if the income is taxed in the source country, it is not taxed again here.  REALITY?  Well, no taxes will be due until next year end, as in December 2024, so expats can breath, wait and see basically as the system and its application IF ANY unfolds.

– Crackdown on loan sharks in Thailand
Deputy Prime Minister ANUTIN has ordered all districts, large and small, to record any reports of loan sharking and the public is being invited to report any claims of demands for payment with menaces OR extortionate lending rate.  HIS PLAN?  Well, the report wil be filed in a database and  then a comprehensive crackdown on illegal lenders will begin.  Money lending here is almost a tradition for those who DON’T qualify for bank loans, either due to a lack of equity OR working on the black economy without records.  But the methods used to collect are often vicious and the rates.. beyond belief.

– Air quality levels remain good in Pattaya
Amid reports that smog levels in the capital are already rising toward dangerous levels, Pattaya air quality remains GOOD.  This morning again levels here were in the 40’s which are more than acceptable for PM 2.5.   Will that change? Well, if last year is any indication, then by the new year we could see those levels rising to the danger zone.  It all depends on winds and of course the sources of the smog which are often outside Thailand, but there is no doubt that industry here too lays a part in the air quality issues.

– ‘I wanted to swim to Pattaya’, says tourist found floating in bay
Meanwhile at home and word is that a Russian tourist who was RESCUED by a freely travelling the Koh Larn route was in fact trying to SWIM the gap between the mainland and the island.   Passengers on the early morning ferry spotted what they thought was a body, amid strong waves caused by recent winds.  Daft?  For sure, as not only is the bay dangerous during high winds, but he was on his own.  Safe?  Certainly, as the crew hauled him from the water and reminded him that his savings were just a few baht for the ferry and perhaps in the future that was the best way to travel.  He had, however, made it a few miles out from the shoreline but the chances of him completing his planned route.. were, we are told, minimal.

– Tourist robbed of over 100,000 baht by ‘lady of the night’
A Turkish man who met the lady of his dreams on an internet site arranged for her to visit here from Phuket but, according to him, she stole his money while he took a shower prior to what HE thought was going to be a night of fun.  Seems he thought it’s normal to carry 100K baht with him at all times here.  Weird?  For sure, but that the amount he claims she stole from him while he freshened up, prior to walking back into his bedroom to find that whilst his towel hid his modesty, his valuables, and his beau, were gone. Along with his brand new Iphone. Police are seeking a dark haired lady, approx. 5’4 with a smile on her face who, its expected, has already fled the city.

– Snakes in Pattaya
With the advent of colder weather of late, the advisory is to watch out.. for insects and more in your homes AND CARS.  Several reports this weekend from listeners of an increase in creepy crawlies seeking warmth but also of snakes too, looking to escape the cold weather.  With most local snakes said to not be dangerous unless messed with, many have taken to local snake groups to ask ‘is this one gonna bite me?’. However, using a net is the best way to eject them, and there is a free snake removal service for all here, just takes a call to the emergency services and they come round, remove Sid and take him to a rural area to be set free.

– – British tourist beaten as Pattaya girls fight for his attention
A drink fuelled fight between bar girls OVER a western client has hit the British media this week as it’s claimed that a young Englishman attempted to break up a spat between two ladies FIGHTING over his attention.  That led to the whole bar crew taking out their frustration on HIM.  Seems he took a pasting, but nothing broken and his Only wish, according to police, was to be allowed to go back to his room, and sleep.  No word on which, if any, accompanied him to sooth his wounds.
