– Up to 200 Thais held hostage in Cambodian casino
Nine Thais liberated by Thai officials on the Cambodian border have claimed that they were among up to 200 thais being held against their will in a Cambodian casino, and forced to  work in a scam call center – how did they escape?  Well, according to them, out of desperation they set fire to the building they were confined to and fled.  Thai officials report that they were cut and bruised when finally making it to the border crossing, many without papers but obviously Thai nationals.   If they are to be believed, and it’s likely true, they and others had crossed the border into Cambodia illegally with the promise of casino work but then were confined and forced to work in call centres.  Whether the Cambodian police will truly investigate is yet to be seen, but all 9 gave the same statement, that 200 Thais are being held.

– Electricity & Diesel price cut for Thailand
The Cabinet plans to cap the price of Diesel and electricity, seeing a three month max price for Diesel fuel set at 30 baht at the pumps.  For electricity.. it’s not so straightforward.  For poorer homes, good news, as usage up to 300 units a month will be fixed at a lower rate. For the rest of us, and industries, rates weren’t announced.  BUT GOOD NEWS for tourists and the Thai medical system as one outcome of the cabinet meeting was the recognition at least that all tourists coming here, long or short visits NEED comprehensive medical insurance.  The issue can’t be left in the hands of visitors for sure, as many erroneously come here without any cover, playing Russian roulette,  and a committee must now propose a plan.

– Bangkok gunman arrested
The suspected gunman involved in the killing of a tech college student AND a passing teacher has been arrested in Chiang Mai following a national search for all involved. As we reported yesterday, a large number of organized gang members were caught in raids over the weekend and Monday, but the main players remained at large.  Now, the 20 year old will be returned under guard to the capital.

– Cooler weather sees frost in Thailand
Many of us came here to get away from it, most of our Thai friends and family have never seen it – FROST.  The chilling western winter weather feature has popped up in a mountain region of Chiang Mai again this week, amazing and delighting visitors, many who have only seen frost or snow… on TV.  The Chom Thong district is expecting a large influx of domestic more is predicted.

– Human legs found in imported container
In Sri racha, at a cardboard recycling plant where waste paper is shipped in from abroad, employees discovered a pair of.. human legs amongst a container supply from the US.  Distinctly human and still wearing shoes, they were sent for forensics examination as American embassy and police were advised.  Likely the result of a crime there, the job of tracking the erstwhile owner is down to the Americans, but for staff sorting cardboard, it was a shock for sure.

– Street cleanups for Pattaya
And a street cleanup has begun this week seeing city hall teams out, not just clearing waste but chemically cleaning and hosing down streets in order that they are safer and also DON’T allow a buildup of smog particles that cover the region, but could go back into the atmosphere.  Either way the cleanup sees the streets smarter and less black, so good news, ahead of the high season.
