– Five Russians jailed in crypto abduction case
The Phuket provincial court Yesterday sentenced 5 Russians to 2 years jail each after admitting to kidnapping a Russian couple and extracting a million dollars worth of crypto from them before setting them free.   With the original sentence of 4 years, cut in half, as is standard here as they pleaded guilty,  they had abducted the couple in January this year and fled after seeing the currency transferred.  2 were nabbed at the airport, 2 in a local hotel room and the ringleader, caught with his pants down, literally, as he was arrested in a local massage shop.

– Investigations lead to arrest in missing cadmium waste case
With another 3500 tonnes of cadmium waste discovered at various other storage facilities used by an errant Samut sakorn company, the central investigation bureau has, we are told, arrested at least one Thai business operator and is actively seeking others.  The toxic waste has been found not only there but also in the capital and our own province of Chonburi.  And with a local news item, which we cover later, causing a scare near Pattaya,  it’s been claimed that the money behind the operation was Chinese supplied.

– Thaksin’s lese majeste case postponed until May
Decision on whether or not to indict former PM Thaksin, now apparently recovered from his medical condition, on charges of Lese Majeste, has been deferred by the attorney general until the end of May.  Citing a slow supply of documents and evidence, the AG office will also consider a  written petition for fair treatment, from  K. Thaksin himself.

– Thailand works on refugee emergency plan
Thai authorities are working on a refugee emergency plan in advance of what could become a mass exodus of Burmese from war torn Myanmar very soon, with some citing numbers around the 100K mark,  many are already fleeing as nationalists appear to be gaining the upper hand in numerous areas against the military government there.   Thailand has maintained a neutral viewpoint on issues there and as a result is seen as an ideal conduit for peacemakers to both sides of the continued conflict.

– Thai cabinet endorses committee casino report
The cabinet has endorsed a special committee on gambling in the future for Thailand which will liaise with the ministry of finance and other departments, take in public opinion and discuss potential locations.  It’s NOT a done deal, yet, but is certainly something which is becoming more and more likely in the future.

– 10,000 baht digital wallet for Thai’s ‘promised’ by end of 2024
The much delayed PROMISED 10K Baht digital handout to all Thais on incomes under 70K baht a month and with minimal savings  has now been promised for the end of this year.    Funding for the 500 BILLION baht election promise, which didn’t win the current government the election, is due to come from fiscal budgets and not loans, so we are told.   Funds will be paid into phone apps, set up for citizens and usable in stores local to them for essential and NOT luxury goods.  Unless it IS set up carefully tho, many are warning that mom and pop corner stress could soon be offering big screen TVs to customers too, and that, well we are told, will be closely monitored.

– Thai doctor offered bribe to drop lawsuit against Swiss
Thai media is reporting that the 26 year old thai doctor, who was kicked and berated by an angry swiss man on a Phuket beach  has been approached with a bribe, from his cohorts in exchange for her dropping the charges. Urs Fehr faces losing not only his business, but also his visa if found guilty, despite the potential fines being minimal but, according to the doctor, she isn’t about to drop the charges.

– Panic in Pattaya as sacks of unknown waste found by lake
Nong prue has seen the discovery of hundreds of sacks of unknown content dumped near a pond that is used by many as a water source.  FEAR rose quickly as nationality here as a search for missing sacks of toxic cadmium waste but despite the fact that locals claim that the sack contents turn from black to pinkish colour when in the water. No one has confirmed the true content of what is obviously dumped waste.  With a local ex-optician demanding a speedy response from authorities, and the dumping ground close to maprachan lake, it’s essential that the contents are analysed as there is a good possibility that leeching sack contents could reach the water table.

– Bus stations bustling ahead of Songkran festivities
Bus stations around the city are bustling with Thais going home early for Songkran.  Reports indicate that many rides are sold out and extra buses are being laid on.   Traditionally, Thais return to their homesteads for the new year festival, however many will STAY, after extra salary inducements are offered by employers.  North Pattaya, for sure, has seen extra congestion with buses turning AND the continued closure of the right turn from the motorway onto the Sukhumvit.

– 3 injured in concrete viewpoint collapse
Construction of a concrete viewpoint in Bangsaen collapsed due to poor contraction before it was even finished this week, seeing 3 workers injured.    The restaurant owned project appears to extend right out to the ocean and locals are questioning whether permits were given, but for now, that is not the issue.  The three workers needed hospital treatment and someone.. has to clear up the mess whilst others chat with the restaurant operators to decide IF it can be built at all.

– Thief arrested for stealing a ride moments after prison release
In Jomtien when a local lag was released from prison after serving time for theft, he needed a ride, so stole one.  Caught quickly,  the thirty year old had only been on this side of the wall for a few hours and, according to local police, will be back with his erstwhile room mates quickly.  The bike owner, who reported the theft was amazed at the speed of recovery – as was, probably, the thief.
