Pattaya news & Thailand news today (30 September 2022) Fabulous 103fm

As predicted, Typhoon Noru was reduced to a heavy tropical storm front by the time it reached Thailand. That, though, didn’t stop mass flooding in many North Eastern areas as the front moved slowly across the nation.  By last night it was the Nakhon Sawan and Kamphaengphet areas turn for huge deluges , seeing many homes flooded before it moved on, this morning into the border regions with upper Myanmar.  In all 40 provinces saw heavy storms,  and more are likely as part of the roll on effect.  In the capital, which took heavy rain, the concern now is for river levels which will continue to rise as upstream flooding flows into the Chao phraya river.   Thailand, despite flooding and damage to some infrastructure, has been lucky in this one. Vietnam, where 400K people were in shelter, has seen major infrastructure damage which will take months to repair as there, the storm was still at typhoon status.

Who is Thailand’s PM?  That’s the question on everyone’s mind as today is the day that the constitutional court is set to publish ITS ruling on General Praut’s timeline in office IF it’s deemed he took office 8 years ago after the cup, then it’s time up, as 8 years is the maximum anyone can be PM under the current constitution, BUT IF, as he claims, he should only be judged based on the date the constitution went into effect, then, he will be back in the hot seat.  With an election due within the next 6 months in Thailand anyway, and Gen Prawit at the reins for now, as Prayut awaits the court’s decision, it’s anyone’s guess.

An official statement in the Royal Gazette yesterday heralded the cancellation of the State of Emergency in Thailand, introduced due to covid in March 2020 and giving the government extra powers to tackle any and all events nationally.  The ruling goes into effect Saturday, the first of October.

The Russian real estate couple on Koh Samui who claim to have been extorted by a mafia style gang.. Well, they have now asked for witness protection here.  The so called gang, compromising of fellow countrymen and others, working out of Pattaya and encountered them, for some reason, to demanded cash with menaces. A novelty request for sure, as Thailand certainly DOES have a protection program, and has had for close to two decades BUT, that involved relative anonymity for those involved, name and home location changes and more.  As non Thais, much of the program simply cant be applied, they are essentially Russian nationals with Russian passports and names WHICH, at best, can only be amended in their home country, BUT, good news as a second man, this time still on Samui, was nabbed yesterday and pretty soon we can expect to discover whether this WAS RANDOM  EXTORTION or WHETHER THE COUPLE WERE IN SOME WAY INVOLVED WITH those who demanded their money, with menaces.

Good news for those who can READ Thai, as that twenty baht note in your pocket may be worth a fortune soon. It seems the printers ‘De La Rue’ have conceded that a small amount of 20 baht notes HAVE gone into circulation, with the number 20 clear in English but NOT in Thai. The error was spotted but only after an initial run. THOSE notes then, will for sure become collectors favourites,  SO, best to learn the difference, or ask your partner to check your NOTES FOR YOU.

Meanwhile at home, and despite storms and gale force winds at all times around our area, the Pattaya region escaped the rain completely, albeit with a handful of minor showers.  At times, the storm cloud pattern almost enveloped the city, but simply passed us by.  Good news for those in lower areas, and a reprieve for city hall, allowing mpre prep of drainage as, without doubt, at some time the storms will be back.

Pattaya’s Bikini Beach race is set to take place at the end of October. That’s been approved now, and close to 1000 have already put in their names to run in what is always a FUN RUN.
